What is the difference between SEM and SEO?

SEM actually used to be an umbrella term which encompassed SEO, but over time many marketers have separated the two.

SEM uses paid methods (typically PPC) to encourage conversions, reach your audience, and achieve whichever other goals you’ve set out. SEO is focused on optimising your website, so you perform better organically, meaning you can get more people to your site without paying for their visits individually.

PPC stands for Pay-Per-Click. Pay-Per-Click advertising is charged based on the number of clicks you get on your ad. It’s calculated by multiplying the Cost-Per-Click (CPC) by the number of clicks. So essentially, you only pay for the clicks that the ads generate.

The amount you pay for clicks is dependent on a number of factors such as, competitiveness, quality score, time, location, demographic, and many more. An expensive keyword is likely one that’s either highly relevant for your industry, has a lot of competitors fighting for it, or is not being optimised efficiently. So the solution is analysis and optimisation. While you can do either/or, SEM and SEO actually work really well as a combined strategy for a few reasons.

  2. SEM can offer results in the short-term, whereas SEO is a long term growth strategy and can take a few months to generate results in some cases.
